Africa-Press – Nigeria. A financial analyst, Kalu Aja, said Nigerians do not trust President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to spend their taxes properly, which explains the apprehension over the new tax laws.
He made this disclosure in a statement on his X account on Friday.
His comment comes as the chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, insisted on Friday that the implementation of the new tax laws will begin on January 1, 2026, despite ongoing controversy.
Reacting to the controversy surrounding the new tax laws, Aja stressed that Nigerians do not trust that the government would use their taxes appropriately.
He argued that the luxurious lifestyles of government officials in Nigeria have further amplified these fears.
Aja decried the lack of transparency in the handling of the tax laws, alleging that past Nigerian governments have not adequately impacted citizens’ lives as expected.
“The issue is trust. Nigerians don’t trust the government with the power to spend their taxes properly on their behalf.
“Between the National Assembly and the Presidency, we don’t even have a credible copy of the tax bill, yet you expect Nigerians to pay these taxes?
“The taxes Nigerians have already paid, how were they spent?
“You want Western-style taxes? Be transparent on taxes like the West,” he wrote on X.
Lawmaker Abdulsamman Dasuki has raised concerns over alterations in the country’s tax laws.
Dasuki’s allegations have stirred renewed controversy over the new tax laws in recent days.
In an update on Friday, the National Assembly ordered the tax laws to be re-gazetted.
