Africa-Press – Rwanda. Experienced point guard Rosine Micomyiza has joined APR women’s basketball club on a one-year deal.
The 29-year-old joins APR after two seasons with REG where she played a pivotal role in club’s championship victory during the 2024 national women’s league.
She also played a key role in securing the team a spot in the Women’s Basketball League Africa (WBLA), where they finished in fourth place.
REG could lose more players including their all-important American guard Destiney Philoxy who is yet to extend her contract.
Meanwhile, APR renewed the contract of shooting guard Sandra Kantore who signed a one-year deal.
APR had a flying start to the 2024 season, winning its opening game 124-42 against UR Kigali before beating AZOMCO 96-54.
Who is Micomyiza?
Born on September 5, 1995 in Kicukiro District of the City of Kigali, Micomyiza is the first born from a family of five – four girls and one boy.
The graduate from Uganda Christian University, in Business Administration, Micomyiza says she looked up to Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James in her early days in basketball.
Before devoting herself to basketball, Micomyiza says she tried many sports including athletics and football. It was not until she was in senior five of her secondary school studies, at APE Rugunga, that she dropped everything else to focus on basketball.
After a few years practising basketball and featuring for her school in the national inter-school’s championships, Micomyiza was, in 2013, invited to train with league side The Hoops Rwanda (formerly Rwandans Allied for Peace and Progress – RAPP).
During her successful stint in Uganda’s Women Basketball League, UCU Canons won back-to-back three championships. Upon her return to the country, Micomyiza immediately rejoined her former club The Hoops Rwanda and captained them to the finals of the Playoffs Games where they lost 4-2 to champions APR in the best-of-seven series.
