Africa-Press – Rwanda. Rwandans living in Zambia and India marked Umuganura on Friday, August 1, with events focusing on national unity, hard work, and cultural preservation.
Umuganura, Rwanda’s national harvest day, celebrated on the first Friday of August, stands out as the only traditional event officially recognised on the national calendar, highlighting its deep cultural and historical significance.
Celebrated annually since its reinstatement in 2011, Umuganura carries the theme this year: “Isoko y’ubumwe n’ishingiro ryo kwigira”, which loosely translates to “A source of unity and foundation for self-reliance.”
In Zambia, the celebration event took place in the capital, Lusaka, bringing together around 400 participants, hosted by Rwanda’s High Commission to Zambia.
Speaking to the participants, Emmanuel Bugingo, Rwanda’s envoy to Zambia, urged the community to embrace the spirit of Umuganura through unity, cooperation, and hard work.
He commended them for celebrating the day, calling it a sign of ownership and national responsibility, as he pointed out that the holiday is a reminder of Rwandan values such as patriotism, integrity, and solidarity.
Eric Twagirumukiza Mugwaneza, chairperson of the Rwandan community in Zambia, lauded the members for their active role in supporting Rwanda’s progress.
In India, the celebration brought together Rwandans living in New Delhi and beyond.
In total, about 100 participants took part in the celebration.
Rwanda’s envoy to India, Jacqueline Mukangira, said Umuganura is an important holiday for of national identity, unity, and economic resilience, as she encouraged young people to take pride in Rwanda’s cultural values.
The majority of Rwandans in India are university students, who continue to show interest in national events such as Kwibuka, Kwibohora, Umunsi w’Intwari, and Umuganura.
The celebration included cultural performances and sharing of milk for children, as well as food and drinks for adults.
