Africa-Press – Rwanda. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) — such as diabetes, hypertension, and certain cancers — have long been perceived as the burden of older generations. Yet, the recent numbers revealed by the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) show a worrying trend: more young people are falling prey to these silent killers.

And alarmingly, many still believe, rather falsely, that youthfulness and physical strength place them above the risk. This illusion must be shattered.

While current statistics are not yet at crisis levels, the trend is clear and cannot be ignored. Poor lifestyle choices — from reckless consumption of alcohol-laden cocktails to diets high in sugar and fats, coupled with lack of exercise— are laying a dangerous foundation for future health problems.

The culture of endless partying and indulgence is often celebrated as youthful freedom. But we must ask: at what cost?

There is nothing wrong with making merry. Life is to be enjoyed. However, enjoyment must come with responsibility. How many times do young people attend social events without knowing or caring what they are putting into their bodies?

The casual consumption of substances whose ingredients they cannot name, combined with a disregard for regular health checks, is a recipe for disaster.

It is time for young people to embrace preventive health practices, starting with regular screening for NCDs. Early detection saves lives and reduces long-term health costs. Screening is not an admission of weakness; it is an act of strength and maturity.

We also call upon institutions like the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) and other health stakeholders to do more. Public screening initiatives should not be tied to occasional events like Car Free Day.

They must be accessible, frequent, and youth-friendly. Take the screenings to campuses, nightlife hubs, workplaces, and community centres. Make it easy for young people to know their health status and to act on it.

The future belongs to the youth, but only if they are healthy enough to claim it. Let this be a wake-up call.
