Message from former President James Michel on the occasion of the 47th Independence Day anniversary

Africa-Press – Seychelles. On June 29, 1976, like many Seychellois, I witnessed the birth of our nation. Just like there are great uncertainties on who a child will become, the same could be said of the Republic of Seychelles as its new flag was hoisted for the very first time. We were determined to work together to nurture and maintain our sovereignty.

“Forty-seven (47) years later, Seychelles has grown and matured into a proud nation, standing tall alongside other successful countries. In such a short time, we have managed to make significant progress on all fronts.

“Our country and accomplishments are highly regarded and valued across the globe. It is reason enough to be proud indeed. As we celebrate this Independence Day anniversary, let us remember the many people who fought hard for our political and economic freedom. Our celebration of nationhood should also be a time for serious reflection on the people we have become and our aspirations for our children and generations to come.

“I invite all my fellow countrymen and women to take inspiration from the intentions of the founding fathers of our nation; expressed through the preamble of our Constitution and declaring our desire “to build a just, fraternal and humane society in a spirit of friendship…”

“We can achieve these noble goals by standing united as a nation in combatting the challenges affecting our society today. Our children in particular have to be protected from abuse, violence, harm and the ills of modern society. Let us embrace the values of respect, including that of human life, tolerance, kindness, compassion, amongst others, that have characterised our people.

“We are known to the world as a kind and peace-loving people. ‘As descendants of different race, we have learnt to live together as one nation under God and can serve as an example for a harmonious multi-racial society…’ Let us therefore do everything possible to achieve this aspiration of the founding fathers of modern Seychelles as expressed in our Constitution for the greater good of our country and people.

“Happy Independence Day and God bless us all.”
