Ady Macauley Alleges Rigged 2023 Elections and Distrusts Judiciary

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Ady Macauley, a lawyer and one of the APC flagbearer aspirants for the 2025 elections, has alleged that the 2023 general elections were openly rigged and lacked transparency.

Speaking on national television, he accused the current government of manipulating the process without fear.

“We have a government that is not afraid of stealing elections,” Macauley said. “They did it in broad daylight in 2023. Even the international community came out and said the results were not mathematically possible. I was the one that supervised the APC team.”

Macauley said the APC made a decision not to challenge the election results in court due to a lack of trust in the country’s justice system. “Basically, the party took a political decision not to go to court because they don’t trust the judiciary,” he explained.

He also spoke about the Commissions of Inquiry, saying that when it started, the APC took legal action. “We filed in the Supreme Court challenging the legality and functional competence of the commission,” he said. “We argued that it lacked rules of evidence and proper procedure. The case is still in the Supreme Court and has not been heard.”

Macauley added that the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) refused to publish the voter register, which led him and a group of lawyers to take legal steps. “We went to court to force the ECSL to publish the register,” he said. “But nothing happened. These are some of the reasons why the APC feels it would be a waste of time to keep going to a system that doesn’t deliver justice.”

Although he declared his flagbearer ambition months ago, Macauley used the interview to emphasize his track record. “What the party needs now is bold leadership, strategic thinking, a clear vision, and the ability to bring people together,” he said. “I’ve shown that. I’ve been on SLBC and many other media platforms. I’ve served this party, and I’m waiting for the people to say, ‘This is what he has done.”

Ady Macauley, is a trained lawyer with a degree from the University of London and further training at the Sierra Leone Law School. He served as a prosecutor for the Anti-Corruption Commission from 2011 to 2016 and later became Commissioner from 2016 to 2018.
