Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) on Friday, 11 July, officially ushered in a new era of leadership with the formal handover ceremony to its newly elected executive, headed by President Alhaji Manika Kamara.

The former President, Ahmed Sahid Nasralla handed over to Kamara who served as a Secretary in his executive for over two years.

The event, hosted at the Bintumani Hotel in Aberdeen, Freetown, brought together a cross-section of media professionals, former and current SLAJ executives, institutional partners, and development stakeholders in a show of solidarity and support for the journalism body.

Delivering a goodwill message at the ceremony, the Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr extended heartfelt congratulations to President Kamara and his team, acknowledging SLAJ’s enduring role in safeguarding press freedom, promoting ethical journalism, and serving the public interest through responsible reporting.

The Mayor stressed on the need for the new executive to uphold and elevate the standards of professionalism while adapting to emerging challenges in the media landscape. “This new chapter calls for a renewed sense of purpose,” Aki-Sawyerr said, “recognising that your work not only informs the public but also fortifies the pillars of our democracy.”

Looking ahead, she expressed optimism about continued collaboration with SLAJ in advancing decentralisation, building climate resilience, fostering civic engagement, and supporting inclusive development initiatives across the country.

With President Manika Kamara now at the helm, SLAJ is expected to deepen its commitment to media freedom and integrity, while also embracing innovation and inclusive dialogue in shaping Sierra Leone’s democratic future.
