Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. A flagbearer aspirant for the main opposition, All People’s Congress (APC), Osman Timbo, has raised serious concerns regarding the recent decision by the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) to ban political campaign materials, including banners and posters, in public spaces.
In an interview, Timbo questioned the timing of the PPRC’s announcement, noting that the ban was imposed just as the APC is set to begin its lower-level elections in August this year.
“It is almost at the time when the All People’s Party (APC) is about to commence its lower level elections,” he stated, stressing on the poor timing by the PPRC.
Timbo expressed scepticism about the motives behind the ban, suggesting that it raises questions about the PPRC’s intentions. “We have our reasons for why they brought up the ban decision only now,” he remarked.
He, however, refrained from making any hasty conclusions, stating, “I do not want to make a quick conclusion by judging that it is because the APC wants to start their election, and the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has already finished theirs.”
He further elaborated on his concerns, asking, “Why only now? Why not before?” His inquiry reflects his suspicion regarding the PPRC’s decision-making process and its potential impact on the APC’s electoral activities.
Timbo’s reaction stems from a ban proposed by the PPRC in late June on the display of campaign materials by political parties in the country. The PPRC warned in a press release that the display of such materials could spur tensions akin to that of the national election. The Commission threatened action against political parties that could fail to abide by the directive.
