Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Ministry of Transport and Aviation has successfully set up a new strategy for progress in its just-concluded its three-day Annual Transport Sector Retreat, bringing together all government transport agencies under the theme “Enhancing Quality Service Delivery in the Transport Sector.”

The objectives of the retreat are to strengthen efficiency, improve coordination, and align transport-sector service delivery with the Ministry’s mandate and the national development agenda. The sessions focused on evaluating achievements, identifying systemic challenges, and mapping out the sector’s strategic direction for the next two years.

Permanent Secretary Edward Kwame Yankson stressed on the importance of uniting all agencies under the Ministry to reflect, evaluate, and plan strategically. He emphasised that the retreat provides a unique platform for transforming the country’s transport and aviation landscape through improved policymaking, better information flow, and stronger institutional collaboration.

He further announced the recent addition of two new institutions, the Sierra Leone Railway Regulatory Agency and the Sierra Leone National Shipping Agency.

He highlighted the need for a clear strategic direction to make them effective and competitive within the transport and maritime ecosystem.

Delivering his statement, the Director of the Public Sector Reform Unit ( PSRU), Sulaiman Phoray-Musa, praised the sector for exemplary leadership, particularly in performance management.

He noted that transport agencies continue to lead in signing and fulfilling performance contracts and highlighted the government’s broader reforms in remuneration, digital transformation, and institutional capacity building.

He stressed that effective governance requires visionary and ethical leadership capable of driving reforms in a rapidly changing global landscape.

In his keynote address, Minister of Transport and Aviation, Alhaji Fanday Turay reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to building efficient and sustainable transport systems.

He noted that significant progress has been made over the past two years despite considerable challenges and stressed the need for the sector to assess where it started, where it stands, and where it intends to be.

He described the retreat as a crucial platform for realignment and emphasised that developing a two-year strategic plan is a top priority.

“A shared and inspiring vision is essential for driving strategic change,” he said, adding that the plan will help agencies track progress and stay aligned with national development goals.

He also stressed on the need for reshaping transport systems across the world through Sustainable E-Mobility for All, adding that, as a nation, the Ministry strives to build inclusive, efficient, and climate-resilient transport networks, e-mobility stands out as one of the most transformative solutions of our time.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to fostering unity, collaboration, and excellence across all transport institutions as it works toward building a safe, reliable, and modern transport system for the people of Sierra Leone.
