IMO Pledges Support for Sierra Leone's Maritime Compliance

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has committed to providing technical support to Sierra Leone aimed at improving the country’s compliance with international maritime standards and advancing its broader transport and aviation reform agenda.

The commitment was made during a series of high-level engagements held at the 34th Session of the IMO Assembly in London, United Kingdom, on 2 December 2025.

According to the Senior Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Aviation, Edward Kwame Yankson – who served as the Alternate Head of Sierra Leone’s delegation – the assurance of technical assistance followed several bilateral discussions between Sierra Leonean officials, IMO representatives and other member states.

Yankson said the pledge from the IMO represents “a major step forward for Sierra Leone’s maritime sector,” noting that it stemmed directly from an impactful presentation delivered by Ambassador Alhaji Fanday Turay, Minister of Transport and Aviation, during the Assembly’s opening session.

He added that the Minister’s personal engagement with the IMO Secretary-General further strengthened the country’s case for enhanced maritime cooperation.

The support, once implemented, is expected to boost Sierra Leone’s maritime administration, reinforce its ability to meet international regulatory requirements and contribute to ongoing reforms within the wider transport and aviation sectors.

Officials say the collaboration will help position Sierra Leone to better align with global best practices at a time when international compliance is becoming increasingly important to maritime safety, environmental protection and trade efficiency.
