Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Presidential Spokesman Hon. Alpha Kanu has said that 60 to 70 percent of Sierra Leoneans are happy with President Julius Maada Bio’s leadership.
He made the statement during a recent online media discussion while responding to questions about Sierra Leone’s ranking in the 2025 World Happiness Index. The report placed the country as the second least happy in the world, and the lowest-ranked in Africa.
Kanu dismissed the findings, saying they do not reflect the situation on the ground. According to him, the people of Sierra Leone are not showing signs of unhappiness in their daily lives. He said he does not see anyone crying in the streets or expressing frustration about the state of the country.
He added that when people are asked about how they feel, they are not sad or angry, and that many are going about their daily lives without complaints. Based on what he observes across the country, he said around 60 to 70 percent of the population is satisfied with the work President Bio is doing.
He also suggested that the Happiness Index may not capture the real experiences of people in Sierra Leone and questioned how the scores are determined.
The 2025 World Happiness Index ranks countries based on factors like income levels, life expectancy, social support, and people’s own views on their well-being. Sierra Leone’s ranking has raised discussion among citizens and government officials alike.
In his comments, Kanu pointed to public behavior as a better indicator of happiness than international reports. He said if people were truly unhappy, it would be clear in their expressions and actions.
