Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice has held a technical working session with the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) to review the drafting instructions for the proposed Human Rights Commission Act 2025.
The meeting, held at the Attorney General’s Office in Freetown, forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the legal and institutional framework of the HRCSL
The engagement followed the formal submission of the proposed legislation by the HRCSL. In response, both institutions agreed to establish a joint technical committee to thoroughly examine the draft and incorporate necessary refinements. The objective is to ensure that the new legislation aligns with international human rights standards and adequately addresses the evolving needs of human rights governance in the country.
Key participants in the review session included the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Alpha Sesay; the Solicitor General; Commissioners of the HRCSL; and technical staff from both entities. The discussions centered on legal provisions that could enhance the autonomy, effectiveness, and accountability of the Commission in executing its mandate.
According to officials, the proposed Human Rights Commission Act 2025 is intended to replace or update existing legislation governing the Commission. The initiative forms part of broader institutional reforms aimed at strengthening human rights protection, reinforcing the rule of law, and ensuring access to justice in Sierra Leone.
The collaborative approach taken by the two institutions was praised by observers as a model for participatory lawmaking, particularly in areas that directly impact citizens’ rights and freedoms. It is expected that the revised draft will soon be finalized and presented to Cabinet for further review before being tabled in Parliament.
Stakeholders believe that once enacted, the new law will provide a more robust legal foundation for the HRCSL to carry out its functions independently and effectively.
