Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The daughter of Sir Maurice Dorman, Sierra Leone’s first indigenous Governor-General, Sibella Laing visited the Sierra Leone Parliament earlier this week on Wednesday, October 8, 2025.
During her visit, Sibella was given a special tour of Parliament by the Deputy Clerk of House, Gilbert Bosco N’habay.
During the tour, the Deputy Clerk narrated the history of Sir Maurice Dorman, Sir Milton Margai, and Siaka P. Stevens. He said the visit served as a powerful reminder of the nation’s history and the foundational role her father played in Sierra Leone’s post-independence years.
During the tour, Madam Laing was shown the precinct of Parliament where the nation’s laws are debated and passed. She expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to connect with key institutions her father worked closely with during his tenure.
The visit was described as both cordial and reflective, highlighting the enduring respect for the figures who helped shape modern Sierra Leone. It underscored the living connection between the nation’s founding history and its contemporary democratic institutions.
Sir Maurice Henry Dorman was the British Governor General from 1956 to 1962. Dorman was white and British, but became Sierra Leone’s first Governor-General after independence in 1961.
A close friend of Sir Milton Margai, he worked with him to usher in Independence in Sierra Leone, serving as the first Governor General of newly-independent Sierra Leone in 1962.
