EU Envoy Meets ECOWAS Chairman President Bio in Brussels

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Joao Cravinho, the European Union Special Representative for the Sahel, has paid a courtesy visit to ECOWAS Authority Chairman and President of Sierra Leone, His Excellency Julius Maada Bio.

During the meeting, Mr. Cravinho acknowledged President Bio’s new role and said the European Union is ready to work with him to deal with the region’s challenges.

He also gave an update on his ongoing work in the Sahel and spoke about efforts to build stronger ties between the European Union and countries in the region. Mr. Cravinho also spoke about President Bio’s journey from a former military leader to a two-term elected president and now ECOWAS Chairman and said his leadership is well known across the Sahel.

President Bio thanked the European Union Representative for the visit and welcomed the European Union’s continued support. He said the Sahel needs focused support, and as Chairman, he plans to work closely with the region’s leaders to improve cooperation.

He also mentioned the growing security problems affecting both the Sahel and nearby coastal countries, and said one of his main goals is to engage directly with transitional governments in the region.

This visit shows the European Union’s interest in working with ECOWAS as both sides look for ways to respond to the complex challenges in the Sahel.
