Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Government of Sierra Leone has launched a new solar energy project in Kambia District.
The project is called Lite Salone and aims to bring solar power to 10,000 homes between December 2024 and January 2026.
The project is being done with support from the Government of Ireland, the Embassy of Iceland, ENDEV, the European Union, German Cooperation (GIZ), Trócaire, KADDRO, Easy Solar, PI-CREF, and the Government of Sierra Leone.
Most homes will pay a flat monthly fee of SLE 60 for the solar kits. The bottom 10% of households, chosen through a local and transparent community-led ranking process, will receive the solar lamps for free.
The project supports the government’s plan to increase access to electricity in areas not reached by the national grid. Many people in rural communities still use wood and charcoal for energy.
The Lite Salone project is part of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio’s plan for a greener and more inclusive energy future in Sierra Leone.
The project brings together public and private groups, as well as local communities, to help improve access to clean energy.
The Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy, and Food Security (PI-CREF) Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella said the project could help with better health, education, and income in the district.
