Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. A needs assessment mission conducted from May 26 to 30 in Sierra Leone has laid the groundwork for the implementation of a Maritime Single Window (MSW) system at the Port of Freetown.
The MSW is a digital platform designed to streamline information exchange among various stakeholders and agencies involved in managing ship arrivals, port stays, and departures, ultimately simplifying formalities and reducing operational costs.
In accordance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) directives, all member states, including Sierra Leone, are required to implement maritime single window systems in their ports by January 1, 2024, to enhance global shipping efficiency.
The assessment mission was carried out by IMO consultants in collaboration with the Port of Freetown, key government ministries, public agencies such as customs and border control, and other stakeholders. The mission concluded with a stakeholder meeting aimed at reviewing and validating the findings.
A comprehensive report from this mission will serve as the foundation for further developing the Maritime Single Window in Sierra Leone, in line with IMO principles and guidance.
The report will include key recommendations and a pre- and post-activity survey to gauge stakeholder awareness of the technical and operational requirements of the MSW.
This initiative is part of the IMO’s Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme (ITCP), in partnership with the Sierra Leone Maritime Administration.
