Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Sierra Leone’s Health Minister, Dr. Austin Demby, commemorated the life and legacy of Akmed Sidi, affectionately known as “Black Coffee,” during a recent address.
Sidi, a passionate youth leader and activist, was recognised for his unwavering commitment to public health and social justice.
The Health Minister stressed on Sidi’s exceptional ability to connect with the people, stating, “He belonged to the people. He spoke their language, stood with them in their struggles, and used his voice with boldness.”
Sidi was known for addressing pressing issues, including the fight against drug abuse and the promotion of health awareness, particularly during his own battle with Mpox.
The Minister stressed on Sidi’s courage and moral clarity, noting, “He had an uncommon moral clarity, a fearless generosity of spirit, and a deep personal drive to see Sierra Leone’s youth survive and thrive.” This dedication was evident in Sidi’s decision to share his health challenges publicly, transforming a personal struggle into a powerful message for the nation.
Dr. Demby highlighted that Sidi’s transparency during his illness served as a national teaching moment. “He showed us that vulnerability, when met with purpose, becomes a powerful tool for healing,” he stated.
The Minister further confirmed the importance of genuine health communication, suggesting that impactful messages often come from authentic voices rather than traditional media.
As the nation mourns the loss of Black Coffee, Dr. Demby called for a renewed commitment to public health initiatives that are inclusive and responsive to the needs of all citizens. “Let his legacy guide us. Let his passion renew our collective sense of duty,” he urged, stressing on the need for partnerships built on trust and support for the vulnerable.
The Minister concluded by expressing a collective vow to honor Sidi’s memory by ensuring that every young person in Sierra Leone is seen, heard, and supported. “Rest in power, Black Coffee. You have stirred something deep in this nation, and we will not let it sleep,” Dr. Demby concluded.
