Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. President Julius Maada Bio, on Sunday morning, congratulated Sierra Leone’s senior female football team for winning the WAFU A Women’s Tournament in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

“Our Queens have truly made history by clinching Sierra Leone’s very first International trophy in women’s football,” Bio shared on Facebook.

He added that the victory is “a monumental achievement” for the country. The President said that Sierra Queens’ performance has reignited his passion and dedication for football in the country.

The Sierra Queens defeated Senegal 1-0 to win their first-ever major trophy on Saturday evening.

Captain Salamatu Kamara’s loan goal from the penalty spot in the 70th minutes was enough for the Sierra Leoneans to win the trophy.

Many football fans in the West African country are jubilant over the victory with some heaping praises on the Sierra Leone FA for developing female football in the country.

Three years ago, the FA established a professional women’s football league, which has since become a significant platform for female athletes in the sport. Today, a majority of the players are actively participating in this league, highlighting its crucial role in promoting and developing women’s football within the country.
