Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Veteran politician Ibrahim Ben Kargbo has revealed that a major housing project involving Belgian investors collapsed due to a lack of support from key government ministers.
Speaking during a recent media discussion, the senior member of Sierra Leone’s main opposition party, All People’s Congress (APC), said that two years ago, a group of investors from Belgium came into the country with a proposal to build 20,000 houses. The plan was to construct 10,000 houses in Freetown and 5,000 in each of the country’s regions.
Even though he is in the opposition, Kargbo said he felt it was his duty as a Sierra Leonean to support the initiative. He introduced the investors to President Julius Maada Bio, and the discussion reportedly went well.
Following that meeting, President Bio appointed four ministers to handle the project. According to Kargbo, only the Minister of Lands showed interest. The other three ministers were hard to reach and did not engage with the process.
According to Kargbo, the investors returned to Sierra Leone several times, hoping to push the plan forward. But after facing the same delays and lack of engagement, they decided to end the project entirely.
Kargbo blamed the failure on the lack of cooperation from the ministers, saying their inaction held back a project that could have benefited many Sierra Leoneans and supported the President’s development efforts.
Kargbo believes the project could have gone ahead if the responsible ministers had played their part, and he sees the breakdown as a missed opportunity for the country.
