In a significant step toward fostering gender equality and promoting social justice, the organisation Legal Access through Women Yearning for Equal Rights and Social Justice (LAWYERS) on Tuesday, 11th November 2025, held a one-day training session with stakeholders from Kori and Kowa Chiefdoms in Moyamba District.
The event opened with a welcome address by Mariama E. Hickson, who underscored the importance of empowering women through legal access to rights and resources.
The training created a platform for community stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions on key legislation affecting women’s rights. Bai Karama presented an overview of the initiative, outlining its objectives and the critical issues being addressed.
Among the major laws discussed were:
Customary Land Act 2022
Employment Act 2023
Registration of the Customary Marriage and Divorce Act 2007
Child Rights Act 2007
Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Act 2022
These legislations form a crucial framework for advancing women’s rights and equality in Sierra Leone. Participants discussed the challenges and opportunities surrounding their implementation and shared ideas on ensuring that these laws are effectively enforced to benefit women in their communities.
“This training is about more than just information; it’s about mobilising collective action to ensure that women’s rights are recognised and upheld,” said Mariama E. Hickson. “We must work together with stakeholders to create an environment where women feel empowered to claim their rights.”
The session concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to advocate for the effective implementation of these laws, ensuring that women across Moyamba District can thrive in all aspects of life.
