Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Major General AI Bangura has officially assumed the role of Chief Inspector of Explosives Management for the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces. The ceremony took place at the Myohaung Officers’ Mess on Friday, June 20, 2025.
Colonel SMO George, the Operations Coordinator of the Explosives Coordinating Team, welcomed distinguished guests to the event, emphasizing the importance of the transition in strengthening national safety and regulatory oversight concerning explosives management. The newly formed Explosives Regulatory Team is set to evolve into the Explosives Regulatory Authority.
In his address, Major General Bangura highlighted the significant concerns raised by the nation’s leadership regarding the management, use, and distribution of explosives in Sierra Leone. He referred to a troubling incident six months prior, where three containers of explosives were discovered at Six Mile, prompting the need for enhanced oversight to ensure state security.
Bangura explained that following legal advice from the Attorney General regarding the 1955 Explosives Ordinance Act, President Bio appointed him as Chief Inspector of Explosives on April 25, 2025. His primary responsibility is to regularize explosives laws and align them with contemporary practices.
The Chief Inspector outlined efforts to engage with Members of Parliament and multinational companies, conducting workshops and forming technical teams to facilitate a smooth transition in explosives management. Collaborative work with various ministries and agencies has led to the development of eight Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) governing the importation, transport, storage, use, and recycling of explosives across different sectors.
With the RSLAF’s presence in every district, Brigade Commanders are now designated as Regional Explosives Chief Inspectors, equipped with the necessary expertise to ensure compliance and safety in explosives management nationwide.
Major General Bangura’s appointment and the establishment of the Explosives Regulatory Authority mark a pivotal step toward enhancing the safety and accountability of explosives management in Sierra Leone.
The collaborative efforts among various ministries, agencies, and the military aim to create a robust framework that not only addresses past incidents but also fosters a culture of safety and compliance moving forward.
