Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Port Loko District Teaching Service Commission (TSC) has concluded its regional interviews for the prestigious Presidential Best Teacher Award, with Mohamed Bobson Kamara of Port Loko Catholic Secondary School emerging as winner.
Kamara edged out fellow finalist Tamba Bengu of Free Pentecostal Mission Academy in a closely contested interview held at the TSC office in Port Loko. He will now represent the North-West Region at the national competition in Makeni, slated for October 4, 2025.
Speaking after the interviews, Marian Sallay Abu, Director of Teacher Management at the TSC, described the award scheme as one of President Julius Maada Bio’s flagship initiatives to recognize and celebrate teachers since its introduction in 2019. She highlighted that this year’s celebration is particularly unique, featuring activities such as a float parade, symposium, prayers, thanksgiving, and a dinner.
The rigorous application process involved long essays, background checks, and a final panel interview. The panel comprised representatives from the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), civil society organizations (CSOs), the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (CPSS), Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), local council, the Interreligious Council, and pupils.
While applauding the process, candidates noted challenges including its time-consuming nature, digital-only application system, and overall rigor.
Ms. Abu also expressed concern over the low participation of female teachers and encouraged more women to aspire to compete in future editions of the award.
As Kamara prepares for the national stage in Makeni, he carries the hopes of Port Loko District and the wider North-West Region in this celebration of excellence in teaching.
