The President of Sierra Leone, Dr. Julius Maada Bio was celebrated by thousands of Sierra Leoneans at the Presidential Lodge in Freetown following his historic election as Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The gathering, which was held on Saturday, June 28, 2025, reflected national pride and support for the President’s leadership on both regional and global platforms.
Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Amara Idara Bangura, praised President Bio’s dedication to national service and international diplomacy. “From chairing the United Nations Security Council to now leading ECOWAS, you’ve lifted Sierra Leone’s name with pride. The Armed Forces stand ready to support your regional leadership,” he stated.
Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Sengeh Paul Thomas Esq., congratulated President Bio on behalf of the House of Parliament. “This is a proud moment for Sierra Leone. From championing UN Security Council reforms to being entrusted by your peers to lead ECOWAS, your leadership continues to inspire confidence at home and abroad,” he said.
A special delegation from the Parliament of Liberia presented President Bio with a commemorative plaque, symbolizing regional solidarity. Hon. Rebecca Wesseh of the Liberian Parliament remarked, “Mr. President, your election as Chairman of ECOWAS is not just a victory for Sierra Leone; it is a beacon of hope for all of West Africa. Liberia stands with you.”
First Lady Madam Fatima Maada Bio also conveyed her support, stating, “Your Excellency, the world loves you because you lead with vision and integrity. African First Ladies stand firmly beside you; we are ready to support your priorities and help shape the future of this region.”
Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu, expressed gratitude for the President’s role in restoring the nation’s dignity. “You have restored value to this country’s image. We thank God for you and proudly stand behind your leadership,” he remarked.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Timothy Kabba, highlighted President Bio’s humility and integrity, stating, “Your presence in humanity defines your leadership. You’ve taken on this role at a time of regional uncertainty, and we believe you will lead ECOWAS with the same strength and peacebuilding spirit you demonstrated here in Sierra Leone.”
In his response, President Bio expressed heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support from the crowd. “I am here today because of your trust and belief. This is not just my victory; it is Sierra Leone’s moment. We are a great people with incredible potential. We must continue to dream, to believe, and to lead,” he stated.
Reflecting on his journey, President Bio noted, “This election is a promise fulfilled. Many doubted our ability to lead globally, but today we are not only leading Sierra Leone; we are shaping the destiny of West Africa.” He attributed his leadership qualities to the education and values instilled in him by the Bo Government Secondary School and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces.
The event concluded with a renewed sense of unity and optimism among Sierra Leoneans, celebrating a significant chapter in their nation’s history under President Julius Maada Bio’s leadership.
