Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. President Julius Maada Bio has officially launched the “Football for Schools” Project at State House on Tuesday, October 29, 2025.
The launch was part of a broader event honoring Sierra Leonean athletes from 13 sporting disciplines, including karate, scrabble, gymnastics, volleyball, and cricket. Special recognition was given to the Sierra Queens and the Under-17 Female Football Team for their recent victory as WAFU Zone A Champions.
President Bio praised all the athletes as national heroes, stating, “We are here today to acknowledge and compliment you for the great job you have done for our beloved nation.”
He emphasized his administration’s intentional and results-driven support for women’s empowerment in sports.
The President also highlighted the unifying power of sports, noting that athletic victories bring citizens together beyond political divides. “Your victories mean a lot to me. You are our national heroes. We are a resilient people with many talents,” he said.
The Football for Schools Project, a collaboration between the government and FIFA, aims to nurture young football talent nationwide. President Bio reaffirmed his commitment to equipping schools with the skills and tools needed to develop the next generation of football stars.
Minister of Sports Augusta James-Teima described the event as historic for the nation’s sporting community, while Sierra Leone Football Association President Babadi Kamara reaffirmed the association’s commitment to developing football through the new initiative.
