This initiative marks a significant step toward bridging the digital divide in Sierra Leone’s rural areas. Historically, Yoyema lacked any communication infrastructure, compelling residents to climb trees or travel to Moyamba town for digital transactions.
This transformative project, made possible by the Universal Access Development Fund (UADF), aims to provide equitable access to mobile and broadband internet services across the country. UADF, an essential arm of the Sierra Leone government, is dedicated to ensuring that even the most remote communities can benefit from modern communication technologies.
President Julius Maada Bio has emphasized the critical role of rural telephony in advancing the nation’s agricultural sector. In his address, he pointed out that the lack of widespread rural broadband has been a significant barrier to the success of initiatives like Feed Salone, a program designed to boost agricultural production and food security. By enhancing communication infrastructure, the Rural Telephony Project is expected to facilitate better coordination, information sharing, and access to markets for farmers in Yoyema and beyond.
The project’s inauguration in Yoyema is more than a technological upgrade; it represents a promise of progress and inclusion. The enhanced connectivity will enable residents to engage in digital transactions, access educational resources, and participate in the broader economic landscape of Sierra Leone.
