Sierra Leone High Commission Addresses Deportation Incident

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Sierra Leone High Commission in Accra has addressed the recent incident involving Madam Rabiatu Mariama Kuyateh, a Sierra Leonean who was deported from the United States to Ghana before being repatriated to Freetown on Wednesday, 12th November 2025.

The High Commission said that circulating footage showing Madam Kuyateh being forcibly handled while in custody has caused widespread distress among the Sierra Leonean community in Ghana and beyond. The Mission described the incident as a serious matter requiring clarification, accountability, and preventive measures.

According to the High Commission, upon confirming Madam Kuyateh’s identity and the authenticity of the video, it immediately initiated high-level diplomatic engagements with the Government of Ghana.

The Mission communicated its grave concern to the Ghana Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister for Interior, and the senior leadership of the Ghana Immigration Service, pressing for assurances of her safety, an immediate inquiry into the conduct of the officers involved, and a reconsideration of the deportation process.

The High Commission noted that despite repeated requests, access to Madam Kuyateh was denied on the day of her removal, though its position was made unequivocally clear at every stage.

The Mission stated that earlier today, the Ghana Minister for Interior assured them that a full internal investigation has commenced within the Ghana Immigration Service. The High Commission intends to monitor this process closely and continue to demand transparency and accountability.

The High Commission reassured Sierra Leoneans in Ghana that it remains fully committed to protecting the rights and dignity of its nationals, and urged the community to remain calm while diplomatic efforts continue. Members of the public seeking information or wishing to report concerns were encouraged to contact the Mission directly for updates and support.

“The safety and welfare of Sierra Leoneans in Ghana remain our utmost priority,” the High Commission said, emphasizing its commitment to achieving a fair and responsible resolution and preventing any recurrence.
