Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Sierra Leone has marked a significant step in its aviation modernization agenda with the formal launch of Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) at Freetown International Airport. The initiative, led by the Sierra Leone Airports Authority (SLAA), aims to enhance safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability within the country’s airspace.
The introduction of PBN comes months after the commissioning of the airport’s new ultramodern terminal, a project that has contributed to increased flight operations and a rise in passenger traffic. With this momentum, SLAA is now shifting focus toward upgrading navigational capabilities to align with international aviation standards.
During the launch event, SLAA General Manager Jack Massaquoi underscored the Authority’s commitment to strengthening Sierra Leone’s air navigation services. He highlighted that the new system is being implemented under the African Flight Procedure Programme, with technical collaboration from the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA).
Minister of Transport and Aviation Ambassador Fanday Turay described the transition from ground-based navigation aids to satellite-guided procedures as a major milestone. According to the Minister, PBN will allow aircraft to operate with higher precision, especially during challenging weather conditions, while reducing dependence on older, less efficient technologies.
