Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Jiwoh Abdulai, met with the Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Environment and Climate Change on Thursday to review progress and challenges in managing Sierra Leone’s environmental and climate agenda.

The high-level engagement, held in Freetown, provided a platform for the Ministry and its agencies to present updates on ongoing programs, achievements, and obstacles affecting their operations.

Minister Abdulai highlighted a series of initiatives aimed at addressing climate change and protecting natural resources. These include the development of a national plastic policy, the submission of Sierra Leone’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) to international climate frameworks, adoption of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP), progress on the National Forest Inventory (NFI), and work toward new climate legislation.

According to Abdulai, preventing deforestation remains a key priority, as it is directly linked to water security, food systems, and long-term economic stability. He stressed that the Ministry is implementing community-based programs alongside national policy reforms to address environmental degradation.

In his response, Honourable Yusuf Mackery, Chairman of the Oversight Committee, praised the Ministry’s efforts but called for deeper collaboration between technical staff, government partners, and development agencies. He urged that all environmental initiatives align with President Julius Maada Bio’s broader agenda on conservation and sustainable development.

“Our role is to ensure accountability and build institutional capacity,” Mackery said, adding that the committee’s work is focused on fostering cooperation rather than political confrontation.

The meeting concluded with consensus on strengthening institutional partnerships, encouraging collective responsibility, and maintaining momentum toward climate resilience and sustainable development goals.
