Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Parliament of Sierra Leone has successfully enacted the “Professional Social Workers Regulatory Council Act 2025.”
The law was passed on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, following a series of amendments and discussions.
The bill, presented by Hon. Abdul Sullaman Marray, Chairman of the Legislative Committee, was initially introduced on April 24, 2025. After thorough debate and further amendments, it received final approval during its third reading.
The newly enacted legislation aims to establish the Professional Social Workers Regulatory Council, tasked with regulating professional social workers, social work facilities, organizations, and institutions throughout Sierra Leone. The council will oversee licensing, registration, and disciplinary actions, as well as address related matters to enhance the social work profession in the country.
Members of Parliament highlighted the bill’s significance for the workforce, emphasizing its potential to improve standards and practices within the social work sector.
The bill was piloted by the Minister of Social Welfare, Melrose Karminty, who underscored its importance in fostering a professional framework for social workers in Sierra Leone.
