Vice President Juldeh Jalloh Opens Labour Conference, Shares Government’s Plans for Jobs

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Sierra Leone’s Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, opened the first-ever National Labour Conference at the Miatta Conference Center, focusing on how the government is working to create more jobs and prepare people for changes in the world of work.

The conference took place on 30th April 2025, bringing together government officials, workers, and employers to begin open discussions on labour and employment.

The Vice President said the event was a direct result of an idea raised during last year’s May Day, where it was suggested that government, workers, and employers should sit together and talk regularly about jobs and labour issues. He said this new platform follows international labour standards that support open discussions between all sides.

He spoke about the Big Five Game Changers, the government’s main plan to grow the economy and create work, and explained how new vocational training centres are helping people learn skills that are needed now and in the future.

Dr. Jalloh shared some updates on education, saying that 9 out of 10 children now go to school, more than 11,000 teachers have been hired, and more girls are studying science and technology. He added that the government has put 22% of the national budget into education.

He also talked about the Feed Salone Project, which is working to grow more local food and reduce the need for imports. Between 2016 and 2022, food made up 23% of all imports. New figures from the Central Bank show that food inflation has started to go down slightly.

He said agriculture can help bring more work, especially if the private sector gets more involved in farming and food production. He also said tourism is now counted as a productive sector, with the Ministry of Tourism putting together a plan to grow jobs and income through travel and culture.

After the opening speech, six panels met to talk about job creation, how artificial intelligence might change jobs, fair pay, safety at work, and other key topics.

The conference is meant to start regular talks on how to improve work life and support growth that includes everyone in Sierra Leone.
