Africa-Press – South-Africa. Brazilian President Lula da Silva has joined the long list of world leaders who have arrived in the country for the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg this weekend.
Da Silva, who leads one of South Africa’s BRICS partners, arrived at the OR Tambo International Airport on Friday afternoon. He was greeted by a military ceremonial welcome and singing as he touched down.
The Brazilian president was the first BRICS leader to touch base, just before fellow BRICS leader, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who landed about an hour after him at the Waterkloof Air Force Base in Pretoria.
The two BRICS leaders have also been joined by the Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Støre, and Michael Martin, the prime minister of Ireland.
The two leaders were received by Minister of Social Development, Nokuzola Tolashe, and the Minister of PublicWorks and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson.
This evening, Deputy President Paul Mashatile will host French President Emmanuel Macron, who arrived earlier in the week. The event is to commemorate French citizens who played a role in the fight against apartheid in South Africa.
Mashatile said that South Africa and France enjoy cordial bilateral, political, and economic relations in areas such as trade, industry, defence, and energy.
