Construction industry hailed for driving economic recovery

Africa-Press – South-Africa. The country’s construction industry is being lauded for driving economic recovery after the latest unemployment statistics revealed it created more than 130,000 jobs in the third quarter of this year.

Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson stated that this significant job growth was a direct result of recent reforms implemented within the department.

He spoke at the Construction Summit underway in Boksburg on Thursday, which was also attended by President Cyril Ramaphosa, government officials, and labour and business partners.

Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson: “Let me repeat that: more than 50% of all jobs created in Q3 came from one sector – our sector, construction. This is no coincidence; it’s the direct result of the reforms, partnerships, and determination that the government is bringing to this industry. This is the beginning of what we have long said was possible: that if we fix what’s broken, remove impediments to growth, and build a pipeline of real projects, construction can drive this economy forward.”

Macpherson added that the improvement was the result of an all-government approach, emphasising the collaborative effort behind the gains.

“These gains are the result of the hard and often unseen work that many of you in this room have helped lead to stabilising this industry, restoring trust, bringing order to chaos, and delivering real, implementable reforms.”
