KZN DA Claims GPU Effective Despite Coalition Challenges

Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) said that while the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) coalition has been working well, there are challenges and obstacles that need to be addressed.

GPU partners are set to meet on Tuesday to discuss a way forward for the KZN government.

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), African National Congress (ANC), DA, and NFP-led coalition is experiencing troubles after the National Freedom Party (NFP) expressed no confidence in the arrangement. Following the NFP’s stance, which threatened the KwaZulu-Natal coalition government, the parties have now resolved to meet and chart a way forward on Tuesday.

The DA said there were a number of issues it wanted addressed. The party’s KZN chairperson, Dean Macpherson, said they would not mince their words.

“We’ve been quite clear that the parties of the government must be meeting regularly and they don’t, and I think that is where we need to start.”

MacPherson said political differences among the GPU partners must also be addressed.

“I think there are also obviously tensions between political parties that don’t necessarily have anything to do with the government.”

It is still unclear whether or not the NFP will pull out of the coalition, but the party said it would only stay on the condition that major changes were made in the provincial executive.
