Africa-Press – South-Africa. Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero has revealed that at least 150 kilometres of aging water and sewer pipes in the city are in urgent need of replacement.
The City of Johannesburg has previously faced significant criticism for the perceived slow pace of its upgrades to vital water and electricity infrastructure. City officials have also acknowledged that a major cause of Joburg’s ongoing water woes is the extensive network of old and deteriorating underground pipes.
Speaking on Wednesday at the launch of his CEO Clean-Up Campaign, Mayor Morero reaffirmed the city’s commitment to addressing the crisis by improving and modernising its water and sewer systems.
The mayor singled out the failing infrastructure as a top priority for his administration.
“We are making a commitment as the City of Johannesburg to ensure that we deal with infrastructure refurbishments. The water and sewer infrastructure is high on our list. There are 150km of pipes in the city that have to be replaced.”
Morero’s comments signal a renewed push to tackle the infrastructure deficit that has plagued the city’s water supply and sanitation services.
