NERSA Reviews Court Ruling on Electricity Tariffs

Africa-Press – South-Africa. The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) says it is studying a court ruling related to electricity tariffs.

On Friday, the North Gauteng High Court found NERSA’s approval of municipal tariffs without proper public participation and cost studies was unconstitutional.

The regulator has until 18 November to convince the court why the ruling should not be final.

Chief applicant, AfriForum, has welcomed the judgment, and spokesperson, Deidre Steffens, said that NERSA would now have to give consumers a fair say regarding municipal tariff increases.

“This is not only a victory for AfriFourm and it’s members but for every person who pays for electricity. This ruling ensures that NERSA and municipalities cannot pull the wool over consumers’ eyes.”
