Africa-Press – South-Africa. President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged people affected by the floods in the Eastern Cape to remain patient, as government teams continue to assess the extent of the damage.
Ramaphosa was on Friday addressing more than 100 displaced residents at Sinolwazi Senior Secondary School in Decoligny, west of Mthatha, one of the communities hardest hit by the recent floods.
Heavy rains earlier this week caused massive floods and widespread damage, claiming at least 78 lives.
The president offered his condolences to the affected families and promised that they would be assisted, but stressed that due process must be followed.
“For those who have been affected, an assessment will be conducted. All we ask is that you be patient with us. We understand that because I’m here today as the president, you want things to be done today, however, government has its processes.”
Ramaphosa is currently visiting flood-hit areas in the area alongside COGTA Minister Hlabisa, Health Minister Motsoaledi, Premier Mabuyane and Basic Education Minister Gwarube.
