South Sudan Enforces Strict Compliance on Foreign Employment

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Ministry of Labour has issued a nationwide order requiring all organizations, companies, and business entities in South Sudan to provide legal work status of foreign nationals in a bid to protect national employment.

In a circular signed by Undersecretary Deng Kenjok, the Ministry announced that the directive takes immediate effect, reaffirming the government’s commitment to fair labour standards, the protection of national employment, and the maintenance of lawful workplaces.

According to the circular, all employers are obligated to ensure that every foreign national in their workforce holds a valid work permit issued by the Ministry of Labour. The Ministry cited Article 46(3) of the Labour Act 2017, which mandates that all foreign employees in South Sudan must possess an approved work permit.

The statement further warns that employing a foreign worker without a valid permit constitutes a serious violation of the law. Offenders, it said, will face severe penalties, including prosecution, fines, closure of establishments, and, where applicable, deportation.

“All employers are hereby ordered to immediately verify the legal status of their entire workforce and ensure full compliance with labour laws and regulations,” the circular stated.

The Ministry also revealed plans to launch nationwide inspections and enforcement operations without prior notice, stressing that any breach will be met with “swift and decisive legal action.”

According to the Ministry, the move is aimed at curbing irregular employment practices and safeguarding job opportunities for South Sudanese citizens.
