Special Court Adjourns Machar Trial Due to Judge's Illness

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The special court trying suspended First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar and seven co-accused has postponed its morning session to Wednesday, the 10th of December, after a panel member did not attend due to illness.

The court opened with the usual roll call for both the prosecution and defence teams. The defence reported that all the accused were present except the sixth accused, who was absent due to health reasons.

But before the hearing could begin, Presiding Judge James Alala informed the court that the panel could not sit because one of its members, Judge Stephen Simon, was ill.

Judge Alala stated, “You see, the panel is incomplete because one of the members is not here. He is sick and undergoing treatment. The session will be adjourned until Wednesday, the 10th of December. The court is now adjourned.”

The missing judge has been the one documenting all trial procedures since the beginning of the sessions, including statements from the defendants, witnesses, prosecution, and defense.

Today’s session had been expected to continue the cross-examination of the first prosecution witness, a Major in the SSPDF.

The special court is trying Dr. Machar and his co-accused over the Nasir incident. They face charges including treason, murder, terrorism, and money laundering.
