Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Bishop Al-Baqir Mohamed Saleh of the Darfur Christian Council urged Sudanese leaders to choose peace and dignity on Thursday during a Christmas service at Gorom Refugee Camp in Juba County.
The Bishop told warring parties to use the holiday as a chance to end the conflict and help refugees return home safely.
Speaking at the Gorom Refugee Camp near Juba, Thursday, 25, the Bishop extended heartfelt greetings to Christians globally, with a specific focus on the displaced communities of the Darfur region, both at home and abroad.
In a direct appeal to the parties involved in the Sudanese conflict, Bishop Al-Baqir stressed that the Christmas season should catalyze dialogue.
He emphasized that the ultimate goal of any peace process must be the safe and dignified return of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their ancestral homes.
“Christmas represents an opportunity to renew calls for peace and unity,” the Bishop stated. “We must seize this occasion to work toward ending the suffering and building a society founded on mutual respect and coexistence.”
The Bishop also challenged his fellow religious leaders to take an active role in the peace process. He emphasized the importance of using the pulpit to promote peaceful coexistence and to spread a spirit of love and tolerance across Sudan’s diverse social and cultural landscapes.
According to the Bishop, the values of the Christmas season—love, peace, and stability—are the necessary tools for mending the social fabric of the region.
The choice of location for the message was significant. By delivering his address from the Gorom Refugee Camp, Bishop Al-Baqir highlighted the Council’s unwavering commitment to standing alongside the most affected communities.
The camp remains a symbol of the difficult humanitarian conditions faced by those forced to flee their homes, but also of the resilience of the Sudanese people.
Bishop Al-Baqir concluded his message with a prayer for the New Year, expressing hope that 2026 will bring the long-awaited “good news” of stability and prosperity to the peoples of both Sudan and South Sudan.
