The Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services, Ateny Wek Ateny, has urged the newly appointed Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Charles Madut Akol, to lead with integrity and maintain an open-door policy to avoid political sabotage and internal divisions.
Speaking on Tuesday, December 23, during a reception rally held in Aweil town, Ateny cautioned the governor against politicians who, after lobbying for appointments, often work behind the scenes to undermine those they helped elevate to office.
“There are many cases where people lobby for you to get into a position, but immediately after, they begin working day and night to remove you,” Ateny said. “Some ensure you are brought down before you have even delivered meaningful services to the people.”
He encouraged Governor Akol to work closely with members of the state cabinet and other stakeholders to improve governance and uplift the image of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.
Ateny further relayed a message from President Salva Kiir to the people of Aweil, saying the president had entrusted Governor Akol to build on the work of his predecessor. According to the minister, President Kiir expressed confidence in Akol’s leadership, describing him as a committed and diligent public servant since the days of the liberation struggle.
Emphasising inclusivity, Ateny advised the governor to keep his office accessible to all citizens and avoid sectarian tendencies. He cited his own experience after assuming office, noting that he appointed an office manager from a different county to promote unity and professionalism.
“My office is always open, and my phone is always on,” Ateny said. “Listen to the people and do not assume ill intentions when appointments are delayed. Everything follows schedules and protocol.”
He also warned against so-called “strong lobbyists” who claim credit for one’s appointment, describing them as dangerous political traps capable of bringing leaders down within a short time.
Touching on digital conduct, Ateny cautioned residents against the misuse of social media, reminding them that the cybercrime law has been passed and violations could lead to prosecution. He urged citizens to use online platforms responsibly and constructively.
In his remarks, Governor Charles Madut Akol thanked the people for the warm reception and pledged to prioritise consultation before outlining his policy agenda. He said he would first listen to government officials and county authorities to better understand the situation on the ground.
“I am truly happy for this reception,” the governor said. “I will listen to authorities and address key priorities such as hunger, border security, and other pressing challenges.”
Governor Akol appealed for unity, stressing that meaningful progress can only be achieved through collective effort. He also announced plans to tour counties in the New Year to assess challenges firsthand, as the state continues to grapple with issues including an influx of returnees and refugees from Sudan.
