Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Authorities at Juba Teaching Hospital reported a busy and successful Christmas Day, with 29 new babies born during the festive celebrations.
Judith Odongo, a registered midwife at the hospital’s Gynecology Department, confirmed on Friday, December 26, that the births included 13 girls and 17 boys, including one set of twins.
Speaking to Eye Radio in an interview this afternoon, Odongo noted that the majority of the mothers had safe, normal deliveries.
“A total of 29 mothers delivered babies. Of these, 27 had normal deliveries, and two delivered via cesarean section,” Odongo stated. “Overall, the deliveries went smoothly with minimal complications. Yesterday was a positive day with no significant issues.”
While the day was largely celebratory, the midwife reported that one baby unfortunately did not survive. Additionally, one mother was treated for postpartum bleeding. Medical staff managed the complication effectively, and she was discharged this morning in good health. The final tally for the day stands at 29 live births (16 boys and 13 girls).
The 2025 Christmas figures show a significant increase in births compared to the previous year. In 2024, Juba Teaching Hospital recorded 20 new births. Last year’s data showed a higher rate of surgical intervention, with eight mothers undergoing cesarean sections compared to only two this year.
