Africa-Press – Tanzania. ZANZIBAR lawmakers from ACT-Wazalendo have been urged to prioritise the island’s interests over party politics to support its development and build on the progress initiated by President Hussein Mwinyi.
Speaking to journalists in Zanzibar, the Secretary of the CCM National Executive Committee (NEC) for Ideology, Publicity, and Training in Zanzibar, Mr Khamis Mbeto Khamis, said the election is now over, and ACT-Wazalendo has won 10 out of 50 constituencies in Zanzibar, along with four Special Seats in Parliament.
He therefore urged them to be good representatives of the people who elected them, for the betterment of Zanzibar’s future.
“They should provide proper oversight of the Government of National Unity, hold it accountable for the promises made to the electorate, and work together with CCM members for the benefit of all Zanzibaris, not for their political parties,” said Mr Mbeto.
He further noted that some of the ACT-Wazalendo MPs and Representatives may be appointed as ministers in the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar (SMZ), adding that the President also has 10 appointed parliamentary seats, meaning anything could happen, since Zanzibar belongs to all Zanzibaris.
Mr Mbeto congratulated ACT-Wazalendo and other political parties for participating in the elections peacefully, stating that CCM is ready to sit at the same table with them to discuss any matter related to the development and the well-being of Zanzibar and its people.
According to the 10th Amendment to the Zanzibar Constitution, which governs the formation of the Government of National Unity, the party that comes second in the election results and secures at least 10 per cent of all votes provides the First Vice President of Zanzibar.
Since ACT-Wazalendo received 23 per cent of all votes in the October 29, 2025 elections, it will submit three names to the President of Zanzibar, who is also the Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi.
The President will then appoint one of the nominees and announce the decision within seven days, as required by the Constitution—an event currently awaited with great anticipation by Zanzibaris.
During the election, CCM’s presidential candidate, Dr Hussein Mwinyi, won a historic landslide victory in Zanzibar’s multiparty political era.
