Africa-Press – Tanzania. TANZANIA’S mine-closure expertise has drawn regional attention, with a delegation from Burkina Faso concluding a learning tour focused on environmental protection and responsible mining transitions.
The delegation met with the Assistant Director for Africa at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ellen Maduhu, during their February 8 to 16, 2026, visit to Tanzania with a mission to understand how Tanzania manages mine closure while safeguarding communities and ecosystems.
Since their arrival, the delegation from the Ministry of Energy Mines and Quarries from Burkina Faso toured key mining sites, including the closed Prime Gold Mine, the transitioning Buzwagi Gold Mine, and the operating Geita Gold Mine.
According to information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, the visits offered first-hand insight into rehabilitation, environmental monitoring, and post-mining land use.
Moreover, the delegation also visited the Ministry of Minerals and the Vice President Office Environment where Tanzania highlighted regulatory frameworks guiding sustainable extraction, closure compliance, and environmental stewardship.
The delegation also visited the African Minerals and Geosciences Centre to observe regional geological research, data systems, and technical training initiatives shaping Africa’s mining future.
Additionally, the ministry stated that the study, which ended on Monday, signals growing African cooperation on sustainable mining and environmental responsibility.
