Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE president of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has called on institutions and stakeholders in the tourism sector to increase cooperation to ensure that Tanzania, including Zanzibar, continues to benefit from international awards and opportunities in the tourism sector.
The award was given today at the State House in Zanzibar, after President Dr Mwinyi received the Africa’s Best Corporate Retreat Destination 2025 Award, which Zanzibar won at the World Travel Awards 2025 held in Bahrain.
The award was presented to the President and Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hamad Hassan Chande.
The victory is the first for Zanzibar, after competing with four countries: Kenya, South Africa, Morocco and Botswana.
Speaking after receiving the award, President Dr Mwinyi said the victory is a great honor for Zanzibar and Tanzania in general, and demonstrates the great level of development of the tourism sector in the country.
He stressed the importance of increasing the quality of services, strengthening tourism attractions, and using the awards as a catalyst for international competition, especially in the rapidly growing area of meetings and events tourism.
He explained that tourism is the “mother sector” of the Zanzibar economy, so strong plans and close cooperation among stakeholders are needed to increase the value and income from the sector.
In addition, he used the opportunity to encourage joint preparations towards Tanzania hosting the World Travel Awards Grand Final 2026, calling on stakeholders to increase creativity and improve tourism products and services.
For his part, Deputy Minister Chande said Zanzibar’s victory is a major step that puts the nation on the world map as a new hub for safari tourism in Africa.
He noted that Tanzania has emerged with five awards in the competition, including the grand prize of Tanzania World’s Leading Safari Destination.
