Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Treasury Registrar has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the business environment, pledging to work closely with Airtel in driving the nation’s digital transformation and achieving the Development Vision 2050.
Speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam after holding high-level discussions with Airtel Founder and Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal and Airtel Tanzania Managing Director Charles Kamoto, Treasury Registrar Nehemiah Mchechu said the talks centred on advancing digital connectivity, expanding financial inclusion, and supporting the country’s socio-economic growth.
“Today is a very crucial day. We are hosting key executives from Airtel Global, including their Chairman and CEO. Our discussions focused not only on Airtel Tanzania’s operations but also on the broader development of the telecommunications sector and digital systems in general,” said Mr Mchechu.
He stressed that the government is ready to match Airtel’s commitment by ensuring the right policies, infrastructure, and investment environment are in place.
Mr Mittal reaffirmed Airtel’s readiness to deepen investment in Tanzania’s digital infrastructure as part of the broader national development agenda under Vision 2050, aimed at accelerating the digital economy.
“Our discussions with Her Excellency delved deep into making more investments in the country and, more importantly, recognising India and Tanzania’s partnership. The government’s ownership of Airtel Tanzania by a 49 per cent stake is a clear testimony that Airtel Tanzania belongs to the people of Tanzania,” he said.
He further announced additional commitments to invest in network and fibre expansion, with a focus on accelerating digital penetration nationwide.
Mr Mittal also commended Tanzania’s strong growth trajectory, underscoring the need for a solid digital framework to drive economic progress.
“I was delighted to hear President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s commitment to the 2050 vision, where digital connectivity and services will hold a very prominent role. Airtel is determined to play a meaningful role in achieving that vision,” he said.
Mr Mittal’s visit forms part of a broader programme of engagements with key government and regulatory stakeholders, including the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) and the Ministry of Finance and Planning, to further support Tanzania’s digital transformation journey.
