Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Union and Zanzibar governments continue to coordinate efforts through the Joint Committee to resolve the remaining Union issues, Members of Parliament were told in Dodoma yesterday.

Deputy Minister in the Vice-President’s Office (Union and Environment), Mr Khamis Hamza Khamis, said that since the establishment of a formal mechanism for addressing Union matters in 2006, 22 out of 25 issues have been successfully resolved.

He was responding to a question from Special Seats MP Maryam Azan Mwinyi, who sought clarification on the government’s plans to resolve the remaining Union challenges.

“The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar have put in place a formal mechanism involving regular meetings of the Joint Committee responsible for Union matters,” the Deputy Minister explained.

He added that the most recent meeting took place on April 4th, this year, at the State House in Dar es Salaam, where discussions were held on the remaining issues.

Progress is ongoing, with various steps being implemented to resolve them. In her supplementary questions, MP Mwinyi inquired about the government’s strategies to counter misinformation regarding the Union and the number of Union institutions with offices in Zanzibar.

In response, the Deputy Minister said the government is continuing to educate the public on the benefits of the Union through various platforms, including newspapers, radio and television.

He also informed the House that a total of 33 Union institutions, including the Bank of Tanzania (BoT), Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) and the Police Force, currently have offices operating in Zanzibar.
