Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE government has issued a stern warning against individuals who circulate indecent videos and images involving children under the age of 18 via social media platforms, vowing to take strict legal action against perpetrators.

Deputy Minister for Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups, Ms Mwanaidi Ally Hamis, delivered the warning in the National Assembly in Dodoma yesterday, while responding to a supplementary question from Special Seats MP Nusrat Hanje.

The MP had sought the government’s position on the growing concern of online child exploitation.

Ms Hanje also asked how the ministry plans to collaborate with the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG) to utilise existing platforms, such as forums and student councils, to combat violence against minors.

In response, the deputy minister said the government has taken several steps to curb online violence targeting children.

Among the key initiatives is the submission of the 2024 Child Protection Law Amendments Bill to Parliament, aimed at strengthening legal safeguards for children in the digital space.

She also noted the launch of the National Online Child Safety Campaign, which seeks to raise awareness and promote responsible internet use among children and adults alike.

Additional efforts include nationwide public education campaigns, distribution of specially prepared materials for children, parents, teachers and guardians and the production of educational drama videos to be aired across various media platforms.

“Honourable Deputy Speaker, in addition to these initiatives, the ministry has established a Customer Service Centre where citizens can make tollfree calls to report incidents or seek information related to child protection and safety,” the Deputy Minister added.
