Tanzania, Japan team up on carbon markets

Africa-Press – Tanzania. Tanzania and Japan have officially launched a Joint Committee aimed at strengthening carbon trading and securing sustainable market opportunities. The committee was inaugurated on Tuesday in Dar es Salaam, marking a new phase in environmental cooperation between the two nations.

Engineer Cyprian Luhemeja, Permanent Secretary in the Vice President’s Office, highlighted that the committee’s work will include reviewing and setting clear rules and regulations to govern its operations. “Our goal is to enhance collaboration with Japan on climate change initiatives and advance projects that deliver real benefits to Tanzania,” he said.

The committee will also coordinate technical advice and attract both local and foreign investors in key sectors such as clean energy, sustainable agriculture, and environmental conservation. These efforts are designed to drive Tanzania’s climate agenda forward while opening new economic opportunities.

Japan, having set an ambitious goal to cut carbon emissions by 60 percent, is seeking strong partnerships to implement projects in transportation, clean energy, and logistics. “Japan’s progress makes it a valuable partner for Tanzania in these areas,” Luhemeja added.

Earlier this year, Tanzania’s Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office, Hamad Masauni, signed a carbon trading cooperation agreement with Japan. This deal laid the groundwork for establishing the Joint Committee, which now has its own set of regulations and project plans to ensure effective collaboration.

As climate change continues to demand urgent action, this partnership signals a proactive approach to carbon trading and sustainable development, aligning Tanzania with global efforts to build a greener future.
