Africa-Press – Tanzania. TANZANIA’S Deputy Minister for Energy, Judith Kapinga, has officially inaugurated a major Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) station in Dar es Salaam, capable of serving up to 1,200 vehicles per day. The move is part of the government’s efforts to ease congestion at existing CNG stations and promote the use of clean energy in the country.

The station, managed by the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), is equipped with modern technology and will operate 24 hours a day. It features pumps capable of serving eight vehicles simultaneously. The launch event also included the introduction of a demonstration bus from the Dar Rapid Transit (UDART) company that runs on natural gas.

Speaking during the event, Kapinga said: “There have been numerous complaints about long queues at CNG stations such as the one in Ubungo Maziwa. Now the government has delivered on its promise to reduce that burden.” She expressed gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for spearheading energy sector reforms through her visionary leadership.

According to TPDC, the new facility is the second-largest CNG station in Africa and the largest in the East African region. Besides serving vehicles, it is also expected to supply gas to institutions such as schools, factories, and hotels using

TPDC Board Chairman, Ambassador Ombeni Sefue, stated that the corporation aims to ensure widespread availability of natural gas for various uses in the country and to reduce reliance on petroleum products. “We will ensure long queues at gas stations become a thing of the past,” he said.

The Vice Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Energy and Minerals, Kilumbe Ng’enda, also praised the initiative, noting that using gas to power vehicles can cut fuel costs by more than 40 percent compared to petrol or diesel.

This development is part of the national agenda to transition towards a green economy that relies on clean, affordable, and environmentally friendly energy.
