Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Tanzanian government has proposed amendments to the Insurance Act, CAP 394, to introduce mandatory travel insurance for visitors entering the country, for 44 US dollars – similar to the arrangement already in place in Zanzibar.

The proposal was presented today in Parliament in Dodoma by the Minister for Finance, Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba, while delivering the Government’s budget estimates for the 2025/26 financial year.

According to Dr. Nchemba, the travel insurance aims to cover visitors against health emergencies related to travel, loss of luggage, costs associated with forced repatriation, or any other risks that may require a visitor’s removal from the country.

He noted that the insurance coverage will be valid for up to 92 days per visitor and will not apply to citizens of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The insurance scheme will be implemented through a public-private partnership, with the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) representing the Government. A revenue-sharing framework will be established to ensure effective management and delivery of the service.
